I had no idea how much time had passed. The little bit of light that seeped into the hole of a place I was being held against my will slowly faded. A woman who didn’t meet my eyes brought down a couple bottles of water and a sandwich wrapped in plastic, slipping it between the rails of the metal door.

Her hair was a matted mess atop her head, bruises covering her face, and her arm had what looked like needle marks, still bloody in some spots.

Was she an addict by choice or by force? Would they do that to me?

“Drink,” she whispered, just barely loud enough for me to hear. “You’ll need it. Just… do what they say, and they won’t be so hard on you,” she sighed before leaving.

Little did she know what I’d already endured in my lifetime. I had no clue how much more I could handle, but I’d figure that out sooner or later. Eventually, all the suffering would come to an end in one way or another.

Scooting to the farthest corner, I wrapped my arms around my knees after pulling them up to my chest. I had no clue how long I’d be stuck in this hellhole, but there wasn’t much I could do about it. I was stuck here with no way out.

I knew checking to make sure the door was locked wasn’t worth my time. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t make it farther than the front door before one of those men caught me and dragged me back here, kicking and screaming. I wouldn’t be surprised if they left it unlocked just for me to try.

I laid my head on the top of my knees, staring out past the bars. I had to wonder if this basement had housed criminals at some point in time, since there seemed to be perfectly spaced bars between the walls. Some of them looked to have been replaced over the years, some were a bit rusty in spots. But either way, they held me in my cage.

The sun slowly sank in the sky, making the chilly basement even colder. Goosebumps coasted my arms. I’d find no warmth here, and I had a feeling it was going to be a long night.

What was everyone going to think happened to me? Would they mourn me, or would they just think I ran off, having had enough of all the drama of the family? How long would they look? Would they ever find my body?

Once, what seemed so long ago, I wanted to die. I begged for it daily. Now, I wanted to beg to live. I wanted to see my family again, even though their actions hurt me. I wanted to hug each and every one of them and never let go.

I wished I could tell Dominic just how much he meant to me. I wished I could tell Peyton that I was sorry for not being a better sister.

I was sorry. Sorry for everything I put them all through.
